Item Authoring

The Item Authoring section of Surpass is where you create and organise your content for tests. In Surpass, question and non-question test pages are known as “items”.

Getting started in Item Authoring

Getting started in Item Authoring discusses everything that you need to have in place before you start creating items. This includes information about item containers known as subjects. You will learn about creating subjects and how to organise your items in your subject.

Creating items

Creating items gives full instructions on how to create each of the unique item types in Surpass. This includes question items like Multiple Choice, Essay, and File Attach. This section also features information on non-scored survey items, used to gather feedback from candidates; basic pages, such as Introduction and Finish Pages; and custom question types, which are specialised question types.

You will learn how to import items to your subject from other sources and how to create friend relationships between items in the form of item sets.

Using media

Using media explores how to add media to items during the authoring process. This includes a walk through of the Surpass media library, how to import files to the media library, and how to add source material to an item. You will also learn how to add video, images, and audio to items.

About Item Search

About Item Search contains information on how to use the Item Search screen. You will learn how to search for items using different filter options and how to combine complex criteria to perform searches. This section also includes information on how to create an item list in Item Search.

About Item Lists

About Item Lists looks at the Item Lists screen. This includes information on how to manage item lists and how to add items to existing lists. You will learn how to move items from one subject to another and how to share items with subject master lists.

About Templates

About Templates gives full instructions on how to create templates for use in HTML subjects. You will learn how to create item templates and component templates. This section also includes information on how to use templates to create items.

About Unit Conversions

About Unit Conversions explores the range of features available in the Unit Conversions screen. This includes instructions on how to create and upload a conversion profile and a conversion glossary. You will also learn how to perform a unit conversion.

Setting up items

Setting up items contains information on how to use the various item settings that are not specific to an individual item type. This includes assistive media, tags, enemy relationships, and workflow statuses. You will also learn how to use bulk update to change these settings on multiple items at once.
