Using tools with a keyboard in the test driver

Some candidates with disabilities rely on keyboards to navigate their tests. In the Surpass test driver, candidates with accessibility requirements can use tools with a keyboard to work out their responses. This includes the basic calculator, the caliper tool, the notepad tool, and the protractor tool which can be added to items in Item Authoring. For more information, read Adding tools to an item.

When taking a test in Surpass, you can navigate through interactive elements on the screen using Tab. By selecting Shift and Tab you can navigate to the previous element. You can select elements using Enter.

This article explains how to navigate tools with a keyboard in the test driver.

NOTE: The actions listed below only relate to the Windows OS and are the same for tests delivered in both web delivery and SecureClient (unless stated otherwise).

IMPORTANT: Zooming in and out too far in tests delivered in SecureClient may cause tools to display incorrectly. If this occurs, close and reopen the tool.

Using tools

The specific keyboard shortcuts needed to navigate tools are detailed in the tables below.

Basic calculator

The basic calculator is a simple calculator tool with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division features. For more information on how to use the basic calculator in delivery, read Using the calculator in the test driver.

Focus	`Tab`	Focuses on the calculator.
Zoom In	`Ctrl` + `+`	Zooms in.
Zoom Out	`Ctrl` + `-`	Zooms out.
Reset Zoom	`Ctrl` + `0`	Resets zoom to 100%.
Move	`←↑↓→`	Moves the calculator around the test driver when the container is in focus.
Numeric keypad	`0123456789`	Enables the numeric keypad.
Decimal point	`.`	Adds a decimal point.
Add	`+`	Selects the Add button.
Subtract	`-`	Selects the Subtract button.
Divide	`←↑↓→` then `Enter`	Navigates to and selects the Divide button.
Multiply	`*`	Selects the Multiply button.
Select button	`space`	Selects a button on the calculator.
Equals	`Enter` or `=`	Selects the Equals button.
Navigate buttons	`←↑↓→`	Navigates the calculator buttons.
Close	`Esc`	Closes the calculator. NOTE: Focus returns to the calculator icon when it is closed.

Caliper

The caliper tool is a digital measuring tool that can measure delivery elements and media in centimetres, inches, pixels, points, picas, and twips. For more information on how to use the caliper tool in delivery, read Using the Caliper tool in the test driver.

Move	`←↑↓→`	Moves the caliper tool around the test driver when the caliper scale is in focus.
Rotate	`Shift` + `↑↓`	Rotates the caliper tool.
Focus caliper buttons	`Tab` or `Shift` + `Tab`	Focuses on the caliper buttons.
Select caliper buttons	`Space` or `Enter`	Selects a button on the caliper tool.
Move caliper tips	`←↑↓→`	Moves the tips of the caliper tool if the tips handle is in focus.
Open menu	`Tab` to Menu button then `Space` or `Enter`	Opens the Menu.
Select unit of measurement	`Tab` then `←↑↓→`	Selects a unit of measurement.
Close menu	`Shift` + `Tab` then `Space` or `Enter`	Closes the Menu.
Close	`Esc`	Closes the caliper tool.

Notepad

Protractor
