Navigating source material with a keyboard in the test driver

Source material are files that the candidate needs to refer to when answering a question. Some candidates with disabilities rely on keyboards to navigate source material associated with their tests. In the Surpass test driver, candidates with accessibility requirements can use the keyboard to navigate source material. For more information, read About source material.

When taking a test in Surpass, you can navigate through interactive elements on the screen using Tab. By selecting Shift and Tab you can navigate to the previous element. You can select answers or elements using Enter.

This article explains how to navigate source material with a keyboard in the test driver. 

NOTE: The actions listed below only relate to the Windows OS and are the same for tests delivered in both web delivery and SecureClient (unless stated otherwise).

Opening source material

To open source material in a test, select Tab to focus and then use Enter

TIP: You can have more than one source material window open at a time and can position them around the screen using the arrow keys.

Navigating source material

The specific keyboard shortcuts needed to access, move, and close source material with a keyboard are detailed in the tables below.

HTML source material

HTML source material is source material created in Surpass. This eliminates the need for third-party apps like PDF viewers when creating source material for candidates.

URL source material

URL source material lets candidates access specific web pages during a test. It allows the user to provide controlled internet access when candidates sit a test in locked-down SecureClient.

WARNING: URL source material can be linked to any website. Not all websites are accessible.

PDF source material

PDF source material is a PDF file which has been attached to a test to be used as source material.

Navigating using navigation controls

WARNING: PDF source material delivered in SecureClient does not show a focus indicator when navigating around it. This can make it difficult for anyone who is using keyboard navigation to see which part of the screen the focus is on.

TIP: If using the PDF viewer in web delivery on smaller screens, try zooming out until there is enough space for it to pin. The Unpin dialogue  button will appear if the browser width is sufficient.
