Navigating question content with a keyboard in the test driver

Some candidates with disabilities rely solely on keyboards to navigate their tests. In the Surpass test driver, candidates with accessibility requirements can use the keyboard to navigate the question content.

When taking a test in Surpass, you can navigate through interactive elements on the screen using Tab. By selecting Shift and Tab you can navigate to the previous element. You can select answers or elements using Enter.

This article explains how to navigate question content with a keyboard.

NOTE: The actions listed below only relate to the Windows OS and are the same for tests delivered in both web delivery and SecureClient (unless stated otherwise).

Navigating questions

The specific keyboard shortcuts needed to navigate each question type are detailed in the tables below.

Essay

An Essay question asks candidates to provide an extended written response to a prompt.

Functionality Action Description
Focus Tab Navigates to text input box.
Zoom In Ctrl + + Zooms in.
Zoom Out Ctrl + - Zooms out.
Reset Zoom Ctrl + 0 Resets zoom to 100%.
Bold ctrl + b Boldens selected characters.
Underline ctrl u

Underlines selected characters.

Italicise ctrl i Italicises selected characters.
Highlight shift + or Highlights selected characters.
Select All ctrl + a Selects all characters.
Change Font Size Not accessible Changes the font size of the text.
Change Alignment Not accessible Changes the alignment of the text.
Next Question Space or Enter Moves on to the next question.

Drag and Drop

A Drag and Drop question consists of text-based ‘drag options’ that candidates must place in the appropriate ‘drop zones’. The available drag options might include incorrect options that are not associated with any drop zone.

Focus Tab Navigates to the desired drag option.
Zoom In Ctrl + + Zooms in.
Zoom Out Ctrl + - Zooms out.
Reset Zoom Ctrl + 0 Resets zoom to 100%.
Select Enter Selects a drag option.

Moves the drag option to the desired drop zone.

Next Question Space or Enter Moves on to the next question.

Audio Capture

An Audio Capture question allows candidates to record a verbal response to a prompt. Candidates can record up to 60 minutes of audio.

Functionality Action Description
Focus Tab Navigates to correct action.
Zoom In Ctrl + + Zooms in.
Zoom Out Ctrl + - Zooms out.
Reset Zoom Ctrl + 0 Resets zoom to 100%.
Record Space or Enter Starts the recording.
Pause Space or Enter Pauses the recording.
Save Space or Enter Saves the recording.
Play Space or Enter Plays back the audio that has been recorded if this option is available.
Progress Bar Forwards and rewinds the audio.
Next Question Space or Enter Moves on to the next question.

Extended Matching

An Extended Matching question asks candidates to draw links between two lists of content. Candidates may be able to draw one or many links from and to each answer option

Focus Tab Navigates to the desired answer.
Zoom In Ctrl + + Zooms in.
Zoom Out Ctrl + - Zooms out.
Reset Zoom Ctrl + 0 Resets zoom to 100%.
Select Space or Enter Selects the answer option and match answer.
Navigate Moves the answer option to select the match.
Next Question Space or Enter Moves on to the next question.

Numerical Entry

A Numerical Entry question requires candidates to submit a number in response to a prompt.

Focus Tab Navigates to the desired element.
Zoom In Ctrl + + Zooms in.
Zoom Out Ctrl + - Zooms out.
Reset Zoom Ctrl + 0 Resets zoom to 100%.
Input numbers 0123456789 Enters numbers into answer box.
Next Question Space or Enter Moves on to the next question.

Hotspot

A Hotspot question asks candidates to find and select a specific part of an image. The correct area can be either rectangular or polygonal.

Functionality Action Description
Focus Tab Navigates to image.
Zoom In Ctrl + + Zooms in.
Zoom Out Ctrl + - Zooms out.
Reset Zoom Ctrl + 0 Resets zoom to 100%.
Select Space or Enter Selects the image.
Navigate → 

Moves the arrow to the desired place.

TIP: To move the arrow further with each movement, hold ctrl.

Next Question Space or Enter Moves on to the next question.

Select From a List

A Select From a List question presents candidates with a string of text with certain words replaced by drop-down lists containing possible answers. At least one of these list items is the correct answer. The other list items are plausible but incorrect answers.

Navigate

Navigates through the list.

File Attach

A File Attach question allows candidates to work in an external app (like a word processor or spreadsheet editor) and upload a file as their response. You can provide a template file for candidates to complete, let candidates work from a blank file, or ask candidates to provide their own files.

Download Space or Enter

Downloads the file.

Open File Space or Enter Opens the file.
Save File Space or Enter Saves the file.
Re-Upload File Space or Enter Re-uploads the file.
Next Question Space or Enter Moves on to the next question.

Multiple Response Question

A Multiple Response question offers candidates a set of possible answers to a question. The options contain correct answers and plausible but incorrect answers. Candidates can select multiple answer options as their response.

Zoom Out Ctrl + - Zooms out.

Multiple Choice Question

A Multiple Choice question offers candidates a set of possible answers to a problem. One of these answers is the correct answer and the others are plausible but incorrect answers. Candidates can select one answer option as their response.

An Either/Or question offers candidates two possible answers to a problem: one of these is the correct answer and the other is a plausible but incorrect answer. Candidates can select one answer option as their response.

Custom question types include pie chart, bar chart, line and scatter graph, hot text, and graph selector.
