Coming soon: Surpass Release 25.1 (ETA: 2025 Q1)
IMPORTANT: This release is still in development and is therefore subject to change.
Test driver
New
- New Delivery Presentation options in Test Profiles (created in Test Creation) let you:
- Choose whether grouped items, shown together on one page in a test, are displayed as individual items with indented breadcrumbs and decimal numbers or as one item in the navigation breadcrumb. If displaying as individual items, a grouped item is marked with a dashed border in the test driver when selected or navigated to, and flags appear next to grouped items in the test driver and the navigation breadcrumb.
- Choose whether item sets and grouped items are auto-collapsed in the navigation breadcrumb (31482, 32174).
Improved
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Response, Either/Or, Numerical Entry, Fraction Entry, Short Answer, Essay, Select From a List, Extended Matching, File Attach, and Likert survey item types now have improved compliance with WCAG 2.2 criteria (42933, 44138, 45514).
- Remaining elements and screens now conform to best reflow practices so that the Surpass test driver is more responsive to the size of candidate devices (17514).
- Legacy (Flash) tests can no longer be taken using SecureClient. The Surpass (Legacy) tablet app can no longer be downloaded (45416, 49646).
Fixed
- Highlighting applied to shared PDF source material no longer remains on screen when switching between different PDFs (19787).
- The search function in the PDF viewer now appears as expected in packaged tests and quality review tests created using the Anonymous Share function (35230).
Item Authoring
New
- Surpass Copilot can now generate complete Multiple Choice questions, including the question stem, answer options, and correct answer. To help Copilot generate more focused content, you can:
- Provide guidance on your subject’s content areas and the standard style/format of your questions.
- Upload domain knowledge files at the subject level for Copilot to use as a data source, and you can choose to limit Copilot to these files instead of it also referring to the internet.
- Attach relevant source material to items for Copilot to use as an additional data source.
- If you want Surpass Copilot to help you generate item content, contact your Surpass Customer Success Manager (38059).
Tasks
New
- Items in Shared Review tasks can now be displayed, sorted, and filtered in a new table view (30375).
Test Wizard
Fixed
- PDFs and HTML source material now open automatically as expected in packaged tests and quality review tests created using the Anonymous Share function, if the Auto-Launch PDF Viewer / HTML Content test setting is enabled (30473).
Test Creation
New
- Branching logic can now be uploaded (in XML format) to test forms with fixed sections, for forward only survey sections (45199).
Test Administration
Improved
- The Moderate and Audit screens have been replaced with HTML versions and therefore no longer need to be opened in the Surpass Viewer, although Moderate (Legacy) can still be accessed. Edit Grade Boundaries, Quintile Analysis, Question Summary, and Package Test functionality has been removed from these screens, and Audit can now be accessed by subject and centre-level users (43380, 43383).
- Candidate review sessions can now be launched directly from a URL without the need to manually input candidate keycodes and candidate review session passcodes, by including the relevant query parameters (48503).
Fixed
- An issue with editing test session details in the Schedule screen (40098).
Reporting
Improved
- Custom reports can now be assigned to scheduled test sessions to be automatically sent to candidates once their test is finished and scored, with their scoring information included. The subject line of the email sent to candidates is configurable and you can choose whether an image of the report is included in the email. This improvement to custom reports functionality means the Custom Reports screen is no longer beta functionality (42600, 49760).
Setup
Fixed
- When updating candidates by uploading a CSV in the Candidates screen, any tags applied to candidates in a single tag group are now replaced by the tag value included in the CSV for the tag group as expected (22626).
Site Settings
New
- Assignment groups can be created in a new Assignment Groups tab, which are a way of ensuring candidate scripts are marked by a specified pool of markers in Surpass SecureMarker. For more information, read the SecureMarker 25.1 Release Changelog (38573).
API
New
- Candidate review sessions can now be scheduled via the API v2 using a new CandidateReview API resource and endpoint (48504).

Surpass Release 12.30 (August 2022)
Home and Surpass Help Site
Improved
- Our legacy documentation website, the Surpass Knowledge Base, has been retired. Key content from the old Knowledge Base has been rewritten, improved, and moved to our award-winning Surpass Help Site (right here!). Our legacy video tutorial website, the Surpass Learning Portal, has also been retired and replaced by our new Surpass Learning training platform, which you can learn more about on the Surpass Learning article in the Resources section of the Surpass Help Site. The Surpass Home page buttons and related site settings referring to the older resources have been updated to reflect these changes.
- As part of the above changes, you can now find a brand new Developer documentation section here on the Surpass Help Site. This section includes the new Surpass API v2 documentation, completely rewritten in an easy-to-read format to capture the full and extensive capabilities of the Surpass API for your integration requirements. The links on the Surpass API v2 test console, accessible by adding /api/v2 to your Surpass URL, have also been updated to point to this new information. In September, this documentation was chosen as a Merit Award winner at the 2022 UK Technical Communication Awards.
