Starting a test and navigating the test driver interface with a keyboard

Some candidates with disabilities rely solely on keyboards to navigate their tests. In the Surpass test driver, candidates with accessibility requirements can use the keyboard to start their test and navigate through it.

This article explains how to navigate the test driver with a keyboard.

NOTE: The actions listed below only relate to the Windows OS and are the same for tests delivered in both standard browser delivery and SecureClient (unless stated otherwise).

General keyboard shortcuts

These keyboard shortcuts apply across all areas of the test driver. 

Shortcuts Description
Tab 
Moves focus to the next interactive element.
Shift + Tab
Moves focus to the previous interactive element.
Enter or Space
Activates interactive element (e.g. button).
Ctrl + +
Zooms in.
Ctrl + -
Zooms out.
Ctrl + 0
Resets zoom. 
 
Scrolls page/area. 
Esc
Closes dismissible popup. 

Specific keyboard shortcuts 

These keyboard shortcuts apply to certain areas of the test driver. These are in addition to the general shortcuts listed above. 

System Check 

You can check your system is working correctly before starting a test in the Surpass test driver. This includes checking your audio and video settings. 

Shortcuts Description
Moves between System Check tabs.

Preferences

You can change the colour preferences of your test in this menu. Read Setting up colour preferences in the test driver for more information. 

Shortcuts Description
Adjusts contrast slider.

Test Feedback

If enabled, at the end of a section or test you can view a performance summary.

Shortcuts Description
Moves between summary tabs.
