Navigating the Surpass media and audio players with a keyboard in the test driver

Some candidates with disabilities rely on keyboards to navigate the Surpass media player and audio player when taking their tests. In the Surpass test driver, candidates with accessibility requirements can use the keyboard to navigate both the media player and audio player.

This article explains how to navigate the Surpass media player and audio player with a keyboard.

NOTE: The actions listed below only relate to the Windows OS and are the same for tests delivered in both standard browser delivery and SecureClient (unless stated otherwise).

General keyboard shortcuts

These keyboard shortcuts apply across all areas of the test driver. 

Shortcuts Description
Tab 
Moves focus to the next interactive element.
Shift + Tab
Moves focus to the previous interactive element.
Enter or Space
Activates interactive element (e.g. button).
Ctrl + +
Zooms in.
Ctrl + -
Zooms out.
Ctrl + 0
Resets zoom. 
 
Scrolls page/area. 
Esc
Closes dismissible popup. 

Specific keyboard shortcuts 

These keyboard shortcuts apply to certain source materials. These are in addition to the general shortcuts listed above. 

Media player

Candidates can be given full or limited access to video player controls, including play, forward, and loop.

NOTE: The frames per second and video speed selector cannot be operated using the keyboard.
Shortcuts Description
Moves progress bar.
Space Pauses/unpauses video.
 
Changes volume.

Audio player

Candidates can be given full or limited access to audio player controls, including play, pause, and rewind.

Shortcuts Description
or Moves progress bar (when the progress bar has focus).
or Changes volume (when the volume has focus).
