When creating an item, you can add tools that candidates can use to work out their responses. There are currently three tools available in Item Authoring: a basic calculator, a scientific calculator, and a digital caliper tool.
In Surpass, every item is assigned a status that indicates its progress along the workflow. Every item starts at Draft and must be set to Live before being able to be added to a test form. Users may only have access to certain workflow statuses depending on their permissions and you can create custom workflow statuses.
When creating an item, you can upload a mark scheme to help users mark candidates’ responses to the item. The following file types are accepted as mark schemes: DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PDF.
In HTML subjects, you can create pre-configured item and component templates to streamline your authoring process and ensure consistency across large amounts of items.
An Audio Capture item allows candidates to record a verbal response to a prompt. In legacy tests, candidates can record up to five minutes of audio. In standard tests, candidates can record up to 60 minutes of audio. HTML Audio Capture items must be created in an HTML subject and delivered in SecureClient.
Assignees complete work within tasks, such as creating item content in Authoring tasks or voting on item quality in Review tasks. Assignees are given tasks by managers.
Tag groups can be further categorised into tag hierarchies. Item authors can select and assign tag values to items from a pre-defined tag hierarchy. You can create tag hierarchies in the Subjects screen of Setup. Tag hierarchies are subject-specific.
When a tag value in a tag hierarchy is assigned to an item, if shortcodes are enabled, the shortcodes of the tag and all its parent tags are combined into a new combined shortcode tag value that is then also assigned to the item. A new combined shortcode tag group must be created to contain the combined shortcode tag values.
Assistive media are small audio and video files that can be added to items so that candidates can hear content in a chosen language or watch a visual aid. Assistive media can be used to improve the accessibility of your items or create unique assessment materials (for example, language testing).
Linear-on-the-fly testing (LOFT) lets you create a unique test for each candidate using items based on domain and psychometric data. This style of testing ensures that individual items are never overexposed or underutilised.
The Tasks section of Surpass allows you to create, manage, and complete assignments. You can use tasks to create and review items and use the deadline tools to manage projects outside of the system.
You can convert units in Surpass by applying unit conversion profiles to items. This lets you convert units across a large number of items. You can create unit conversion profiles in the Unit Conversions screen.
Draft is the default workflow status that all newly created items, tests, and test forms are posted to. Items, tests, and test forms must be set to the Live workflow status in order to be presented to candidates.
In Surpass, you can attach metadata (known as ‘”tags”) to items and then use these tags to organise items when authoring content, creating tests, and viewing results. Tags are made up of categorised containers called “tag groups” that contain individual tags called “tag values”. For example, a tag group called “difficulty” might have the following tag values: “Easy”, “Medium”, and “Hard”.
